A Love-ly Concert

On Valentine's Day, Perry Library patrons were treated to a wonderful concert by Henderson native Raynah Adams. Mr. Adams performed selections from Perry Como, Frank Sinatra, and Billy Eckstine. The audience was filled with music lovers of all ages, and even some families shared their Valentine's Day together at the library.

The first meeting of the Perry Library teen knitters was held recently. All the attendees were new knitters, so we had lots of fun learning from Ms Patti - Ms Barbara even joined in. We decided to meet every other Tuesday at 5pm, so the next meeting will be Tuesday, February 8. If you want to learn, be sure to sign-up by Friday, Feb 4 so we'll have materials for you. Those who attended last week, make sure to bring your needles and yarn with you!

Afternoon with an Author

Library patrons and community members flocked to Perry Library on Saturday to hear author Deborah Brown speak about her latest book, The Joy of Mourning Glories. She wrote the book as part of the healing process after her son, Spc. Lunsford Bernard “Deuce” Brown II, was killed in Iraq in 2003. The book available at the library, as well as her first book, Dead-End Road.

Happy new year to everyone from the Perry Library! The library bid farewell to 2010 with a Kid's New Year's Eve party. There were stories, some dancing, crafts, and, of course, a big countdown!

This month there are several youth and adult programs to choose from:

Youth Services

Our regular schedule of programs returned on January 3 and will continue through April:

Monday - 6:30pm - Bedtime Stories: stories, songs, and a craft for all ages (especially 3-6 year olds)

Tuesday - 6:30pm - Teens & Tweens: Good times for 8-15 year olds

Wednesday -

11:00am - Baby & Me: lapsit for children ages 6 months to 2 years and their caregivers

4:00pm - Anime/Manga Club: come share your love of all things animated (ages 13-17, under 13 with permission from parent/guardian)

Thursday - 11:00am - Mother Goose Time: stories, songs, and rhymes for ages 2-5 years old

Teen Knitting: Ages 12-17 are invited to join us for knitting in the Young Adult room on January 25 from 5:00-6:00pm. All skill levels are welcome. Materials will be available for those who want to learn. Be sure to sign-up at the YS desk so we will be sure to have needles and yarn for you.

Fun in the Sun!

On August 7 we bid a fond farewell to the Summer Reading Program with a day at the beach. All kids, even if they weren't able to be a part of the reading program, were invited to have some refreshments and win prizes at our games. We played beach bingo, did some fishing, and, of course, danced!

Once we finished up our summer reading program, we did a final count of how many participated this summer. We had a grand total of 339 children and 84 teens! Way to go! Obviously lots of reading was done this summer.

July has been a busy month for the Perry Library. July 10 was our Luau Party, part of the summer reading program. There were grass skirts for all, some wild hula-hooping, and lots of fun. The party also marked Ms. Jeriann's last day at Perry. We will miss you!

Later in July we welcomed Ms Patti, and some of the Mother Goose kids helped us pick the bounty from our patio garden (mostly cherry tomatoes). We heard they were delicious! After the tomatoes were picked, some chose to stay around and blow bubbles for a while. It was a beautiful day to be outside!

The Youth Services Department is happy to announce our first Kids Photo Contest. Each photo is anonymously posted to ensure privacy and objectivity. To Vote, please state the number of your favorite photo in the Comments section. You may only vote ONCE! Photos will also be on display at the Perry Library for voting.Due to lack of submissions, the deadline has been extended to July 4th. Voting will run through July 31. Henna Design and Tattooing

Check out the cool designs our local teens and tweens came up with for our Henna Tattoo program. Henna has been used since the Bronze Age to dye skin (including body art), hair, fingernails, leather, silk and wool. In several parts of the world it is traditionally used in various festivals and celebrations.

Young @ ART

Macaroni was the name of the game as kids (and a few grownups) gathered to make jewelry out of dyed pasta and yarn. It's a simple, inexpensive and super fun craft that lets kids show off their creative sides! To dye your own pasta: add a few drops of food coloring or kool aid to a bowl of water, drop in pasta and leave it until it absorbs enough of the dye. The longer you leave it, the more vivid the color. Remove the pasta from the bowl with a slotted spoon and let it dry well. That's it! And remember, just because it's edible doesn't mean it tastes good!

Once upon a time (actually it was April 27), more than 1,000 people gathered to hear stories, tales and songs by the best storytellers NC has to offer.

EO Young Library Time!

On April 9, students from Ms. Hargrove's class at EO Young came to the library for a program about amphibians.

After a small experiment on how amphibians hear, students led a discussion and then made a mosaic frog from craft supplies.

On Earth Day (April 22), dozens of kids and adults gathered to make nature-friendly birdfeeders out of pinecones, learn about recycling and to help plant a small vegetable garden and herb garden on the library's terrace.

In addition to flowers, we planted 2 types of tomatoes, several types of mint, yellow squash, strawberries, hot peppers, spinach, dill, parsley, onions, radishes, basil and cilantro.

The veggies will be used to make snacks such as salsa for our youth programming.

Afterward, everyone enjoyed fresh fruit and veggie trays and took home starter plants for their own gardens.

All materials were either recycled or donated from patrons or businesses.

We want to thank the Friends of the Library, Ranger Charles Shelton, Pacific Mulch, Mimi Spivey, Daniel Orr and Edna Hargrove for their donations!

Storytelling Festival!

Storytelling Festival is coming!!!!!!

The Storytelling Festival is a free event for Vance County’s fourth grade and fourth-grade-level students during the day, and a free Family Festival in the evening.

It will be held on Tuesday, April 27, in the H. Leslie Perry Memorial Library.
Part I, the Fourth-Grade Festival, is held at different sites around the library during school-day hours. Participating schools bus their fourth-graders to the Festival for an hour of educational, inspiring tales from some of the best storytellers in NC (and beyond).

Sites for the event in the library include the Storytime Kiva, the Meeting Room, the Terrace, and the Children’s Reading Area.

Session times are 9:30 a.m., 10:45 a.m., and 1:00 p.m and regional performers include Ranger Charles Shelton, Kenya Allen, Leigh Lambert, Alice Sallins, Vernita “Nana Vee” Terry, Robin Kitson, Claire Ramsey and Markey Duckworth.

Participating Schools with fourth grade or fourth grade level-students include: Aycock Elementary, Carver Elementary, Clark Street Elementary, Dabney Elementary, E. M. Rollins Elementary, E. O. Young Elementary, Eaton Johnson Middle School, Kerr Vance Academy, L. B. Yancey Elementary, New Hope Elementary, Northern Vance High School, Pinkston Street Elementary, Southern Vance High School, Vance Charter School, and Zeb Vance Elementary.

Part II, the Family Festival, welcomes the featured storytellers from the day festival to provide an evening’s entertainment from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. for Vance County’s families in Perry Library’s Meeting Room. Children of all ages are welcome; an age guideline would be ages 5 and up. Children under the age of 10 need a grown-up present.

and Terry Rollins

To celebrate Read Across America, participants from our most popular regular program, Mother Goose Time (Thursdays at 11am for the under 5 crowd) listened and acted out a Dr. Seuss story and had a fabulous time making flower crowns (and licking the glue sticks!).

What STINKS at the library?

It's our newest series: STINK!

STINK is filled with fun adventures and cool illustrations. Comic strips, drawn by Stink, are scattered throughout the book. Comics such as "The Adventures of Stink in Newt Boy meets Jaws Monster" show Stink solving everyday problems with superhuman powers.

The author knew that Stink needed to star in a book of his own when she visited a school and the class chanted, "Stink! Stink! Stink." This book will appeal to both boys and girls, but young boys will especially identify with Stink and his bossy older sister. I hope McDonald writes many more adventures for Stink. He's a delightful character.

READ ACROSS AMERICA 2010!

The Perry Library was the place to be on Tuesday, March 2nd. Hundreds of kids, teens and adults attended the annual Read Across America Event sponsored by the Vance County Association of Educators and the H Leslie Perry Memorial Library. All of the Vance County Elementary Schools were in attendance, with fun displays, games and giveaways for all participants. Local community members read books by Dr. Seuss for a 2 hour storytime and the Perry Library's craft table was a big hit. Every child that attended took home a free book and was able to have their picture taken with the Cat in the Hat.

Black History Month programs

The Perry Library recently presented 2 programs for Black History Month. More than 170 children and adults attended the very educational and entertaining programs, sponsored by the Vance County Arts Council and orchestrated by Council Director Alice Clark Sallins. The programs occurred during the last week of February and focused on the contributions that African-Americans have made in the world of art and culture. Gospel and Blues songs were performed by Roy Burroughs and Alice Clark Sallins. Betty Johnson wowed the crowd with original poetry readings and Alice Clark Sallins told traditional folk tales. Nehemiah Pittman performed a dance tribute to the late King of Pop, Michael Jackson. The audience all received take-home goodies celebrating Black History Month. A huge THANK YOU to the Vance County Arts Council and to Director Alice Clark Sallins!

Have you ever been told by a teacher to pick a Newbery book for a report? Or have you ever wondered why those shiny quarter-sized stickers labeled Caldecott Winner are on some books? Well, here's the explanation I know you've been waiting for!

John Newbery Medal (also know as Newbery Books) for most outstanding contribution to children’s literature. If you're in grades 3-8, you've probably heard of these books, selected by a panel of children's librarians from all over the United States. The Newbery Award has been around since 1922. “When You Reach Me,” written by Rebecca Stead, is the 2010 Newbery Medal winner.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

December has been a big month for celebrations at the library. We welcomed some SNOW in the middle of the month, which caused us to postpone our Holiday party. But party we did!

On Monday, December 21st, we had over 30 children and their grownups for crafts, stories and snacks. The fun continued on the next night as Teens & Tweens club gathered for a Holiday get together. And on Tuesday, Dec. 29th we were treated to 2 Kwanzaa celebrations performed by Nana Vee & Guests. Almost 100 attendees participated in the event, with African music and dancing, homemade crafts and healthy snacks.

Thank you to Nana Vee and her talented friends and to the Friends of the Library for sponsorship of these events!

Introducing......Chewbacca!

A few weeks or so here at the library, we asked kids to nominate some names for a fishy that would be coming to live at the Youth Services desk. From the 20 names nominated, over 120 kids (from ages 3-17) voted to name the fishy Chewbacca, pronounced Choo-bock-uh. Now, if you've never heard the name Chewbacca, let us give you a little education in Star Wars trivia.

Chewbacca (or "Chewie", as he was known by his friends) was a legendary Wookiee from Kashyyyk and co-pilot of Han Solo's ship, the Millennium Falcon. He was the son of Attichitcuk, the husband of Mallatobuck, and the father ofLumpawaroo. Chewbacca carried with him the name of an ancient Wookiee hero, the great Bacca, first of the great chieftains of Kashyyyk, and the creator of asword that denoted leadership among the Wookiees. This name placed Chewbacca in a noble lineage, which was further supported by his role in the Battle of Kashyyyk during the Clone Wars and during the Galactic Civil War.
Chewbacca was a wise, sophisticated being of great strength and loyalty. As technologically savvy as the brightest Academy graduate, he was also a skilled mechanic. Chewbacca, like many Wookiees, was able to understand English, but he could not speak it due to his species's vocal structure. He instead spoke Shyriiwook, the main Wookiee language, composed largely of growls and grunts, to his non-Wookiee companions who typically replied in English.

Fortunately, our fishy Chewbacca is not so big or so hairy. Fishy Chewbacca is little and blue and he if you come to the desk and wave to him, he might wave back with his tail. This is what he looks like:

He protects you,
when your blue
and in a moment of weakness,

Halloween Party 2009

On Monday evening, October 26^th, the H. Leslie Perry Memorial Library hosted its annual Halloween Celebration, with more than 75 children and adults attending. In total, 26 children and 3 adults participated in the costume contest, with the following categories and winners: Mekhi Hargrove – Scariest Costume, Raina Banda – Best Walk, Meredith Wilson – Most Creative, Morgan Johnson – Most Enthusiastic, Anitra Edwards – Funniest Costume & Khalil Gay – Best Overall. The Judges Panel consisted of local library supporters, the brothers of Omega Psi Phi. After the contest, the crowd listened to terrifying tales read by Children’s Librarian Jeriann Thacker and put their wrapping skills to the test with a boys against girls Mummy Wrap. The boys & t

heir mummy (Youth Services supporter Mr. Mike Edwards) edged out a narrow victory over the girls & their mummy (Library Board of Trustees member Mrs. Marion Perry). Afterward, everyone enjoyed refreshments provided by the Friends of the Library.
