Afternoon with an Author

Library patrons and community members flocked to Perry Library on Saturday to hear author Deborah Brown speak about her latest book, The Joy of Mourning Glories.  She wrote the book as part of the healing process after her son, Spc. Lunsford Bernard “Deuce” Brown II, was killed in Iraq in 2003.  The book available at the library, as well as her first book, Dead-End Road.

Happy New Year!

Happy new year to everyone from the Perry Library!  The library bid farewell to 2010 with a Kid's New Year's Eve party.  There were stories, some dancing, crafts, and, of course, a big countdown!

This month there are several youth and adult programs to choose from:

Youth Services

Our regular schedule of programs returned on January 3 and will continue through April:

• Monday - 6:30pm - Bedtime Stories: stories, songs, and a craft for all ages (especially 3-6 year olds)

• Tuesday - 6:30pm - Teens & Tweens: Good times for 8-15 year olds

• Wednesday - 

• 11:00am - Baby & Me: lapsit for children ages 6 months to 2 years and their caregivers

• 4:00pm - Anime/Manga Club: come share your love of all things animated (ages 13-17, under 13 with permission from parent/guardian)

• Thursday - 11:00am - Mother Goose Time: stories, songs, and rhymes for ages 2-5 years old

Teen Knitting: Ages 12-17 are invited to join us for knitting in the Young Adult room on January 25 from 5:00-6:00pm.  All skill levels are welcome. Materials will be available for those who want to learn.  Be sure to sign-up at the YS desk so we will be sure to have needles and yarn for you.

Young @ ART

Macaroni was the name of the game as kids (and a few grownups) gathered to make jewelry out of dyed pasta and yarn.  It's a simple, inexpensive and super fun craft that lets kids show off their creative sides!  To dye your own pasta: add a few drops of food coloring or kool aid to a bowl of water, drop in pasta and leave it until it absorbs enough of the dye.  The longer you leave it, the more vivid the color.  Remove the pasta from the bowl with a slotted spoon and let it dry well.  That's it!  And remember, just because it's edible doesn't mean it tastes good!

READ ACROSS AMERICA 2010!

The Perry Library was the place to be on Tuesday, March 2nd. Hundreds of kids, teens and adults attended the annual Read Across America Event sponsored by the Vance County Association of Educators and the H Leslie Perry Memorial Library.  All of the Vance County Elementary Schools were in attendance, with fun displays, games and giveaways for all participants.  Local community members read books by Dr. Seuss for a 2 hour storytime and the Perry Library's craft table was a big hit.  Every child that attended took home a free book and was able to have their picture taken with the Cat in the Hat.

LB Yancey Storytime 03/02/10

On Tuesday, March 2nd, pre-schoolers from LB Yancey Elementary School visited the library for storytime and a tour.  Afterward, they explored the children's area and took advantage of the books, puzzles and puppets they found there.

*Black History Month programs*

The Perry Library recently presented 2 programs for Black History Month.  More than 170 children and adults attended the very educational and entertaining programs, sponsored by the Vance County Arts Council and orchestrated by Council Director Alice Clark Sallins.  The programs occurred during the last week of February and focused on the contributions that African-Americans have made in the world of art and culture. Gospel and Blues songs were performed by Roy Burroughs and Alice Clark Sallins. Betty Johnson wowed the crowd with original poetry readings and Alice Clark Sallins told traditional folk tales. Nehemiah Pittman performed a dance tribute to the late King of Pop, Michael Jackson. The audience all received take-home goodies celebrating Black History Month.  A huge THANK YOU to the Vance County Arts Council and to Director Alice Clark Sallins!

Will you be our valentine?

Join us on Saturday, Feb. 13 for our all day Valentine Party.  Kids of all ages are welcome at 10:30 am, we'll be having snacks, making crafts and valentines and watching The Little Mermaid (rated G)!

Teens ages 13-18 (and younger kids with a permission slip on file) can join us at 2pm for a showing of William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet (rated PG 13).  We'll be having snacks, crafts and fun!

Wii PLAY @ THE LIBRARY!

Did you know that the Library has a Wii?  Thanks to our ever so generous Friends of the Library association, the Library recently acquired a Wii and games to go with it.  So, watch for special gaming programming to come and if you're between the ages of 8-14, join us on Feb 4 and Feb 18 from 3:30pm - 5:30pm for some gaming fun!  We've got Super Mario Bros., Raving Rabbids, Boom Blocks, Wii Sports and Wii Play!

Read with a Ranger!

This past week we had Ranger Nicole from Kerr Lake State Park doing a spectacular program on Spiders!  Join us on February 15 at 4pm for Ranger Jessica's program and on March 6 at 2pm for a program by Ranger Kandi.  Read with a Ranger is a fun, educational program for all ages, but best for grades 1-6. Fun at Carver Elementary!

On Tuesday, December 15th, Youth Services Librarian Ms. Jeriann and Library Board Member/School Volunteer Ms. Marion Perry performed a Holiday program for the pre-schoolers of Carver Elementary.  There were stories, music, dancing and singing.  Fun was had by all!
