Halloween Party 2009

On Monday evening, October 26th, the H. Leslie Perry Memorial Library hosted its annual Halloween Celebration, with more than 75 children and adults attending. In total, 26 children and 3 adults participated in the costume contest, with the following categories and winners: Mekhi Hargrove – Scariest Costume, Raina Banda – Best Walk, Meredith Wilson – Most Creative, Morgan Johnson – Most Enthusiastic, Anitra Edwards – Funniest Costume & Khalil Gay – Best Overall. The Judges Panel consisted of local library supporters, the brothers of Omega Psi Phi. After the contest, the crowd listened to terrifying tales read by Children’s Librarian Jeriann Thacker and put their wrapping skills to the test with a boys against girls Mummy Wrap. The boys & t

heir mummy (Youth Services supporter Mr. Mike Edwards) edged out a narrow victory over the girls & their mummy (Library Board of Trustees member Mrs. Marion Perry). Afterward, everyone enjoyed refreshments provided by the Friends of the Library.

Newbery Award Winners

The Newbery Medal was named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.

Crispin: The Cross of LeadCrispin: The Cross of Lead by Avi

Publisher Comments
"Asta's son" is all he's ever been called. The lack of name is appropriate, because he and his mother are but poor peasants in fourteenth-century medieval England. But this thirteen-year-old boy who thought he had little to lose soon finds himself with even less no home, family, or possessions. Accused of a crime he did not commit, he has been declared a "wolf's head." That means he may be killed on sight, by anyone.

A Single Shard by Linda Sue Park

Publisher Comments
Tree-ear, an orphan, has become fascinated with the potters' craft; he wants nothing more than to watch master potter Min at work, and he dreams of making a pot of his own someday. When Min takes on Tree-ear as his helper, Tree-ear is elated — until he finds obstacles in his path: the backbreaking labor of digging and hauling clay, Min's irascible temper, and his own ignorance. However, Tree-ear is determined to prove himself.
