Introducing......Chewbacca!

A few weeks or so here at the library, we asked kids to nominate some names for a fishy that would be coming to live at the Youth Services desk. From the 20 names nominated, over 120 kids (from ages 3-17) voted to name the fishy Chewbacca, pronounced Choo-bock-uh. Now, if you've never heard the name Chewbacca, let us give you a little education in Star Wars trivia.

Chewbacca (or "Chewie", as he was known by his friends) was a legendary Wookiee from Kashyyyk and co-pilot of Han Solo's ship, the Millennium Falcon. He was the son of Attichitcuk, the husband of Mallatobuck, and the father ofLumpawaroo. Chewbacca carried with him the name of an ancient Wookiee hero, the great Bacca, first of the great chieftains of Kashyyyk, and the creator of asword that denoted leadership among the Wookiees. This name placed Chewbacca in a noble lineage, which was further supported by his role in the Battle of Kashyyyk during the Clone Wars and during the Galactic Civil War.

Chewbacca was a wise, sophisticated being of great strength and loyalty. As technologically savvy as the brightest Academy graduate, he was also a skilled mechanic. Chewbacca, like many Wookiees, was able to understand English, but he could not speak it due to his species's vocal structure. He instead spoke Shyriiwook, the main Wookiee language, composed largely of growls and grunts, to his non-Wookiee companions who typically replied in English.

Fortunately, our fishy Chewbacca is not so big or so hairy. Fishy Chewbacca is little and blue and he if you come to the desk and wave to him, he might wave back with his tail. This is what he looks like:

Tell us what you want!

So, this is how it works:

1. You tell us what you like to read.
2. If we can, we order it.
3. You check it out and read it.

It's really that simple.

If there is something you want that we don't have, write us a note on the suggestion board in the Young Adult Room or tell a Youth Services staff member. Then, check back on the board to see if we were able to place an order. Easy, huh?

And now.....A Poem.

A friend...

By Sarah Stamper

A friend is someone who is always there,
who never leaves you in times of fear.
Who knows how to make you feel as if your glad to be born,
who knows the scorn,
hiding in your heart, ready to break,
when the anger causes you to shake.
He calms you down,
who wears your crown
of unforgiven thorns.
When your worn,
Down to the bone from society's curse
He is a nurse,
to your broken heart.
And till death till we part....
Was the best saying he ever had
when you felt oh so sad....

He protects you,
when your blue
and in a moment of weakness,
the best words he offer is...yes,
Who watches you go, knowing you'll come back.
who goes through the old stack
of the comic books you used to read
and watches the street with dread.
Because you realize he won't be coming home,
who waits anyway like stone.
A friend is someone who cries on your shoulder
when your lover
who, like he, is also gone for good.
Who tries to protect what you love
who gives you that shove,
to keep you going
when nothing...,
is right anymore
and life's a bore.

A friend keeps you alive,
even when he is given up, so you won't go for the dive.
into oblivion like he did
and end up like the kid
you knew since pre-school
got lost in the pool
of sad emotions, and gave up to the noose.
He put out the fuse,
Before the explosion
and your own dive...

to oblivion....
